YRWŠLM

Mobile version coming soon, please access this website from a larger screen or increase the window size for now.

On the 21st of June 2017, the summer solstice, the light of the old city of Jerusalem was recorded in form of data with the aid of an extended micro-controller and photo-resistors, to let it shine once again from a light installation simulatenously in a synagogue, a mosque and a church. The work „yrwšlm“ utilises the meaning of light as an existential moment of all humans, a symbol of equality and reconsideration of the commonalities. The work should make visible the similarities, in the abrahamic religious as well as the purely human sense, that the sun shines upon all equally.

The visualisation of the work itself consists of a metal construction with 9 LED panels turned towards the inner of the rooms. The light panels disperse the light and darkness of the 21st of June, the day on which the sun shines longest in the northern hemisphere, at the same time. Every change in light intensity, like the covering of the sun by clouds, was recorded by the photo-resistors and can be shown again through the LED panels.

The artist Dana Greiner presents her light installation „yrwšlm“ from the 19th of July until the 11th of August 2018 in three different houses of worship of abrahamic origin. The work will be shown simultaneously and synchronously in the Muslim Association of Puget Sound in Seattle (USA), the Jewish community Comunità Ebraica di Casale Monferrato (Italy) and the Catedral de Segovia (Spain). At the same time, it can be seen online at the address www.yrwslm.com. The virtual show makes an additional immersion into the art possible for the viewers.

The exhibited light installation is a projection of sunlight. On the day of the summer solstice ---, the longest day of the year, the artist recorded the light in the old city of Jerusalem with the aid of photo-resistors and an extended micro-controller, saving it in the form of data. This 24 hour long recording of the 21st of June by the artist will be presented recurringly during the run of the exhibition. The light panels reflect the light, darkness and every changes of this peculiar day. In this form, the piece thematises the temporal binding of the light, its dependency on daytime and season, the weather conditions and the spacial situation. Time as a gradient form gains a fundamental meaning in this. Only through longer beholding of the light is the peculiarity of light made visible, its self-evident constancy and its axiomatic, near unnoticeable dimension of metamorphosis. The natural source of light that is the sun and the artificial light of the installation embrace each other. The small things, moments of light and shadow and the soft transitions that touch upon the secret of light.

A tension between the rational approach through the light and the subjective individual experience is created. The work of art is a sensory experience which becomes a space of perception for the spectators. The light wakes feelings and sentiments and evokes a mental image of the city of Jerusalem. Dana Greiner- „The work […] uses the meaning of light as an existential moment of all the humans, as a symbol of unity and a reflection upon the similarities, putting the light as a primal force in the centre of my work.“

At the same time, the common experience on neutral ground creates a cultural equality. Light belongs to no single people, no religion and no country or continent. The work „yrwšlm“ approaches this idea using different parameters and extends the impact of the light by the factor time. It also embraces and encloses historical, geographical, social as well as cultural and political factors. The potential consists of the possibility to bring the art to a seam, through which the threshold of hermetics can be broken. The locations as special places invite to an inter-cultural and inter-religious dialogue. The art functions as a central point of origin.
